Description/Abstract:
SAMPLES OF LIGHT AND DARK MUSCLE FROM TUNA OBTAINED IN 1968 AND 1969 F ROM THE JAPANESE TUNA FISHERY IN THE PACIFIC, AND THE SAME TISSUES PL US LIVER FROM TUNA FROM THE VICINITY OF BIKINI ATOLL, WERE ANALYZED F OR GAMMA-EMITTING RADIONUCLIDES, FE-55, AND STABLE IRON. TUNA FROM TH E SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE TENDED TO HAVE LOWER CONCENTRATIONS AND SPECIFI C ACTIVITIES THAN TUNA FROM THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE. THERE WERE NO SI SIGNFICANT TRENDS IN THE DATA WHEN FE-55 SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES WERE COM COMPARED WITH SPECIES, MONTH OF CATCH, LOCATION OF CATCH, OR SIZE OF FISH. THERE WAS A CLOSE CORRELATION OF FE-55 SPECIFIC ACTIVITY IN LIG HT MUSCLE, DARK MUSCLE AND LIVER, AND OF FE-55 CONCENTRATION BETWEEN DARK MUSCLE AND LIVER. YELLOWFIN TUNA CAUGHT NEAR BIKINI ATOLL CONTAIN ED CO-60 BELIEVED TO BE DERIVED FROM THE ATOLL. THERE WAS A CLOSE COR RELATION OF CO-60 CONCENTRATIONS BETWEEN DARK MUSCLE AND LIVER. CESIU M-137 CONCENTRATIONS WERE LOWER THAN THOSE REPORTED FOR FISH FROM MID DLE AND NORTHERN LATITUDES BY THREE TO FIVE ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE.
