Description/Abstract:
RESULTS OF RESEARCH DONE ON RADIOACTIVITY IN PLANTS AND ANIMALS AT THE HANFORD LABORATORIES IS PRESENTED. INITIAL STUDIES WERE PERFORMED WI TH RADIOACTIVE IODINE BECAUSE OF ITS PRESENCE IN THE FALLOUT OF ATOMIC DETONATIONS AND IN THE DISPOSAL OF GASEOUS WASTES FROM PLUTONIUM PROD UCTION AT THE HANFORD WORKS. LATER STUDIES WERE PERFORMED WITH MULTIP LE IRRADIATION ASSAULTS AND WHOLE-BODY RADIATION USING VARIOUS DOSES O F X-IRRADIATION. OBJECTIVES OF THE HANFORD EXPERIMENTS INCLUDED THE D ETERMINATION OF PERMISSIBLE CONCENTRATIONS OF IODINE-131 IN VEGETATION FROM STOCK EFFLUENT, DEFINING THE PATHOLOGICAL SYNDROME OF VARIOUS TO XIC LEVELS OF RADIOIODINE IN BOTH GROWING AND ADULT SHEEP, AND IMPROVI NG THE EVALUATION AND CONTROL OF HAZARDS TO PERSONNEL FROM EXPOSURE TO RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS BY EXTRAPOLATION OF ANIMAL WORK. IT IS REPORTE D THAT DOSES OF 50,000 ROENTGEN EQUIVALENT PHYSICAL (REP) ARE REQUIRED TO CAUSE ACUTE DESTRUCTION OF THE THYROID GLAND IN SHEEP. THE AMOUNT OF RADIOIODINE IN SEVERAL GROUPS OF SHEEP IS GIVEN AS ARE THE RESULTS OF BETA IRRADIATION EXPERIMENTS.
