Description/Abstract:
An intact IPC 1478 filter obtained from the Schooner cloud at H + 55 min was examined to determine the extent of uniformity of deposited material. Isoactivity gamma contours obtained at H + 5 days indicated a factor of variation of about 2. The average mass loading was found to be 10.6 mg/cm2, and it appeared to decrease linearly with radius. Gross gamma activity (counts per minute per milligram) showed a net increase of about 7%. If the characteristic light deposition areas are neglected, there appeared to be no significant difference among the quarter sections of the filter based on mass loading or specific activity. Fractionation with respect to particle size is inferred from the ratios of volatile to refractory nuclides. The larger particle are indicated to be more concentrated in the center of the filter. No significant fractionation was observed over 93% of the filter. The relatively high loading (10.6 mg/cm2) may be responsible for the uniformity observed. Values for the concentration of various nuclides (per cubic meter of cloud) are given.
