Description/Abstract:
A considerable portion of the remaining group effort has gone into the examination of diagnostic techniques as well as the design of diagnostic experiments for use in connection with the Rover reactor field test. Two choppers are now under consideration for use in these experiments. The arrival of one of these, the Selove Chopper from Argonne, is presently anticipated. This chopper consists essentially of a 16 inch long cylindrical rotor whose maximum angular velocity 15,000 r.p.m. Designs have been made for a new rotor having two large slits so as to obtain higher counting rates than the original design allowed. The second chopper is in the design stages. The rotor for this will be of the disk type (Fermi Rotor) consisting of alternate absorber and transmitter plates. This system is designed to allow better resolutions and higher counting rates. In order to obtain the radial dependence of the power level in the Rover reactor, an experiment is being designed to monitor the fast neutron flux from the top of the reactor as a function of radius.
