Description/Abstract:
Among the more formidable problems facing the Plowshare Program is the development of our ability to evaluate the radioactivity content of the clouds released by nuclear cratering operations. Some knowledge of this content may be inferred form an analysis of device performance and fallout pattern data. Such an analysis, however, leaves serious gaps. For purposes of predicting potential hazard or treaty violation, the fraction of radioactivity resulting in "driftout" (long-range fallout) must be determined. The only practical method of doing this is by direct sampling of the cloud itself. Appropriate cloud sampling, however, implies the avoidance of a number of pitfalls.
