Description/Abstract:
This note is continuation of AFN NO. 15 which covered the heat transfer in the Helios vessel. Its purpose is to extend that analysis to the nozzle region. It is rough survey intended to obtain approximate values and to define possible problem areas. The results are crude but are probably as good as can be obtained at the present time. Extensive literature surveys indicate that better results may be long in coming and we feel that it is more important at this time to publish what we have than to wait for better data. An attempt will be made to point out questionable assumptions in the text. The areas covered are heat fluxes to the wall, the fraction of blast energy deposited in the nozzle, peak wall temperatures reached during the pulse, rough estimate of the quantities of coolant required and finally the effects of these factors on thrust.
