Description/Abstract:
The studies of the Reactor Safety Project have been directed along the lines of a poison-bearing material to be stored within the high flux region of the reactor. An annular shell of fuel containing an excess of U235 enables the net effect of the poison storage capsule on the neutron economy to be made equal to zero. Shutdown of the reactor is to be accomplished with stored gas pressure by forcing the poison from its storage into the coolant annuli, where the material coats the surfaces of the fuel slugs and process tubes. Release of the poison is accomplished by a combination of the failure of a solder element and the rupture of a retaining diaphragm.
