Description/Abstract:
This report is the first formal Progress Report to be issued by the Reactor Safety Project; because of this, a fairly complete history of the activities of this group is included in this report. The work on reactor safety devices has led to the conclusion that trigger devices using a fission-heat powered failure in a solder joint or solder plug to shut down a reactor by the release of some form of stored energy show the most promise. Work is in progress on the development of a poison-bearing material that will coat out upon the coolant passage surfaces inside a reactor.
