Description/Abstract:
During the past year and one-half, a fairly detailed picture of the internal changes that occur in graphite on exposure to radiation damage has been developed. This study can be divided into three separate, but interrelated, categories. First, from qualitative observations of the changes in various physical properties that occur in graphite on exposure to a radiation flux and the subsequent thermal annealing of these properties, it was possible to infer some of the elements that must go into any interpretation of the nature of radiation damage. In order to make quantitative comparisons it was necessary to formalize the relationship between the various lattice distortions that might be postulated and one or more of the physical properties that were observed to change.
