Description/Abstract:
This investigation analyzes the reaction of TATB (1,3,5 - triamino 2, 4, 6 - trinitrobenzene), an insensitive high explosive, to impact by a hypervelocity projectile, (steel rod, 8 mm diameter and 19 mm length). Projectiles accelerated by a two-stage, light-gas gun to velocities in the range of 3 to 7 km/sec (9,804 to 23,000 ft/sec) appear to have bracketed the detonation threshold of a TATB target when impacted.
