Description/Abstract:
A general description is presented of the Supo water boiler in operation at Los Alamos, the modification of the Swimming Pool reactor as a low power research reactor proposed by ORNL, and the graphite-moderated low power research reactor proposed by NAA. The results of two-group criticality calculations on critical mass, flux distribution, prompt neutron lifetime and various reactivity coefficients are presented and, in the case of Supo, compared with experiment. The safety characteristics of the reactors are discussed, special emphasis being placed on the safety philosophy for low power research reactors as distinct from reactors in general, and aspects of the relation of the utility of the reactors to their safety are indicated.
