Description/Abstract:
UO2 has a cubic structure of the fluorite type. The unit cell dimension for UO2.02 is 5.4694 and for UO2.13 is 5.4635. This shrinkage of a unit cell and corresponding increase in density have been reported by several workers. It is postulated that oxygen atoms enter into the lattice as interstitial defects and take part to some extent in the structure as bonded ions.
