Description/Abstract:
Selective beta-ray absorption techniques, which require no chemical separation, are described for the determination of P32 and As76 in reactor effluent water. The procedures take advantage of the high-energy beta-particle radiations characteristic of these radioisotopes and the relatively short half-lives of many of the other radioisotopes in the mixtures. The As76 beta particles are measured after a one day delay through an absorber sufficiently thick to stop the beta particles from the other radioisotopes. A correction for the gamma radiation seen by the detector is made from a measurement of the sample with an absorber sufficiently thick to stop all the beta-particle radiation. The P32 is measured in a similar manner after a 12 day delay which permits the As76 to decay to an insignificant amount.
