Diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases by means of a scintillation camera with radioisotope

Abstract

Hemodynamic studies of cardiovascular disease were made on 318 patients ranging in age from 2 months to 87 years, and the diagnostic usefulness of the scinatillation camera with radioistope was evaluated forty five of the patients (aged 5 to 24), considered to be normal, were used for computing normal values. Equipment consisted of a Pho/Gamma III type scintillation camera, a 35 mm time lapse camera and a 1600 word memory sytem. Radio-pharmaceuticals used for the study were sup(113m)In and sup(99m)-Tc. Administration of the isotope was by arm injection, allowing it to pass through the heart chamber and major blood vessels as a large bolus of radioactivity. For children 3 years and under, a pinhole collimater was employed to magnify cardiac images and enhance resolution. In septal defects, right left shunting was easier to demonstrate than was left right. Atrial and/or ventricular changes in valvular disease were readily observed on the radio-angiogram and corresponded to the degree of damage. Increased blood pooling was also demonstrable.
