Procedure and composition for secondary recovery of petroleum

Abstract

A copolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride in a brine (sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, calcium chloride) was proposed, for secondary oil recovery in the presence of clays. The ratio of copolymer to salts should be 20 : 1 to 1 : 1500. The ratio between the multivalent salts and sodium bicarbonate is 5 : 1 to 1 : 600. The concentration of salts of multivalent cations should be present in the range of 0.0025 to 0.25% by weight. Alkali metal halides comprise 0.1 to 1% of the polymer solution.
