Histopatological changes in the pulmonary tissue of rabbits inhaled with radon 222

Abstract

The studies were made on the effect of radon 222, given by inhalation route, on the pulmonary tissue of rabbits. The experimental animals were divided into 3 groups: first - control one, second - inhaled with radon 222 at concentration 1 nCl/l of air during 1 hour daily (20 rabbits), third - inhaled with radon 222 at concentration 5 nCi/l during 1 h. daily (12 rabbits). The sections of pulmonary tissue were submitted to the histopathological examination after 10, 20, 30 and 60 days of radon 222 inhalation at the concentration 1 nCi/l during 30 days. On the basis of examinations, it was recorded that the inhalation reveals an activity that might be recognized as stimulant for the pulmonary tissue. On the other hand, its longer application leads to the unprofitable changes, i.e. to the excessive stimulation of cells of the reticuloendothelial system and even to the disseminated pneumonia with slight focuses of atelectasis. After inhalation with radon at concentration 5 nCi/l, the focal pneumonia developed as soon as after 20 days of inhalation, and after longer inhalation these changes are more extensive and intense. The recorded unprofitable changes occuring in the pulmonary tissue of rabbits are connected with inhalation  More>>
