Developments of large integral forgings of nuclear reactor vessel and their manufacturing technology

Abstract

Demands for large size and integral type forgings have been growing in view of the increased capacity of light water reactors (LWRs) and because of the improved inspectability and the easier ISI. These forgings are manufactured from high quality solid steel ingots having a weight of maximum 600 tons based on years of basic research and investigations and lots of actual experiences in ingot making. The nuclear reactor pressure vessel itself is fabricated by the joint welding of various parts and is subjected to stainless steel overlay cladding on its inside surface. From the above standpoint, this paper discusses the evaluation of the ingots to be used making reference to such manufacturing technologies as steel melting, forging and heat treatment as well as the properties of products for the reactor pressure vessels.
