Petroleum production: guiding principles of the development activity

Abstract

The starting idea to develop a project may be knowledge of an original process, a modification of an existing process which is original or an improvement in a known and existing process. In all cases, a preliminary economic and market study is indicated, and also of the patent situation. The decision to proceed is then based on laboratory evaluation, perhaps making of samples, and a study of the expected operating conditions, especially extrapolation to industrial dimensions. This is illustrated by the example of epoxy polymers. The decision to proceed is contingent on pilot plant results which may be rather expensive, depending on the process. This aspect of development is discussed in detail. Mechanical and long term use testing of the proposed product follow. Correct interpretation of the results is paramount at this stage. If everything is favorable, the process can be expanded to industrial scale; further improvements may be found at this stage, which often involves dimensional analysis and is illustrated by the example of a catalytic process.
