Magnetic moment of the 9/2[sup +] 96. 4 keV state in [sup 79] Rb

Abstract

The region of nuclei with A [approx equal] 80 is presently of considerable interest as it exhibits a rich variety of phenomena. In the present work, part of a programme of structure investigation in this region through electromagnetic moment measurements, we have determined the magnetic moment of the 9/2[sup +] 96.4 keV state in [sup 79] Rb. The state has been excited by the [sup 79] Br ([sup 3] He , 3 n) reaction on a K Br target with cubic structure, using a 30 MeV pulsed beam of [sup 3] He provided by a U-120 cyclotron. The measurements have been performed by the TDPAD method at several different values of the external magnetic field. From our investigations the half-life T[sub 1/2] = 18.5(5) ns and the gyromagnetic ratio g = +1.12(5) have been established for the 9/2[sup +] 96.4 keV state. The band properties of the odd Rb nuclei indicated a gradual change of the structure along the isotopes, the [sup 79] Rb nucleus being characterized by a deformation significantly larger than that of heavier once. This change in structure is also reflected in the g factor values of the low-lying 9/2[sup +] states, which show a monotonic decrease  More>>
