Abstract
Upon graduation from university in 1955, the author joined Isuzu Motors Ltd., where he was first ordered to improve on the performance of the exhaust silencer aboard a large bus. The job was accomplished when a resonance box was installed on the silencer outer shell without affecting the freeboard. Next, he was told to realize a resonance frequency of 1Hz on the spring of an experimental vehicle which was a modified truck chassis, and the target was completed. The author was then placed in charge of the study of the strength of the mechanical power transmission system, and analyzed the transient vibration of a linear system switchable between two steps for the investigation of excess torque generation mechanism. For the study of the rattling noise produced while coasting in the connected state, complex sinusoidal waves were inputted and the vibrational response of a rickety system of four degrees of freedom was analyzed using an analog computer. It was a surprise to find that there was very good agreement between the analytical result and the result obtained from a drive of an actual vehicle. The analysis of passenger car structures and loads followed. The concept of irregular vibration has proved to
