Solvent extraction of americium and europium from alkaline and carbonate solutions by 2-hydroxy-5-alkylbenzyl dilthanolamine

Abstract

Extraction of americium and europium from alkaline solutions in the presence of tartrate- and carbonate-ions with the help of 2-hydroxy-5-alkyl-benzyl diethanolamine (DEAP) in various diluents depending on component and pH medium concentration is studied. It is ascertained that americium is maximally extracted by 0.1 mol/l DEAP solution in hexane from tartrate solutions with NaOH concentration being no less than 1 mol/l and 0.5-2.0 mol/l for K/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ solutions with pH>13. The highest americium-europium pair separation factors are produced in 0.1 mol/l DEAP-0.01 mol/l Na/sub 2/C/sub 4/H/sub 4/=/sub 6/-4.0 mol/l NaOH and 0.1 mol/l DEAP-1 mol/l K/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ (pH=12.05) systems. The results obtained allow one to consider DEAP as a perspective extragent for TPE extraction and separation of elements in alkaline solutions, close in their properties.
