Vibratory coring of the seabed. Pt. 2

Abstract

The various types of offshore structure required in offshore oil and gas production necessitate detailed examination of the sea bed. Piling of marine structures requires a detailed knowledge of the sea bed in order to provide the correct design. The assessment of the sea bed for underwater pipelines requires samples to be taken along the route to analyze the sediments, both from the point of view of trenching, the effect of material on the protective skin of the pipe and, after backfilling, the possibility of erosion uncovering the pipe and putting it in a dangerous condition. Any destructive corrosional effects that could arise from the surrounding material, both in the case of piles and pipelines, must be carefully ascertained from laboratory analysis of the cores obtained during the survey.
