Abstract
Based on a study of authigenic minerals of alumina (x-ray amorphous opal, opal-crystobalite, low-temperature crystobalite, quartz) and detection of the laws governing their dispersal in depth in Mesozoic-Cenozoic deposits of southwest East European platform and the Ciscarpathian trough, a zone is isolated of early catagenesis with subdivision of the latter into opal, crystobalite and quartz-halcedon subzones. Comparison of the zones of early catagenesis of the continental block and the bed of the world ocean demonstrated that in the oceanic sedimentary mass, zonality in distribution by depth of the x-ray amorphous opal, opal-crystobalite and alpha-crystobalite is expressed considerably more weakly than on the continent. Mineralogical and crystal-chemical studies of the sedimentary alumina could help to reveal the nature of individual types of rock-collectors and together with other geological data enable a more effective prediciting of their spatial arrangment in the section.
