Abstract
The reaction between mercuric and thiotungstate ions has been followed by means of direct and reverse pH and conductometric titrations in aqueous and aqueous-alcoholic media. The end-points obtained from the sharp inflectons in titration curves occur when molecular ratio of Hg/sup 2 +/ : WS/sub 4//sup 2 -/ is 1 : 1 and correspond to the formation and precipitation of normal mercuric thiotungstate HgS.WS/sub 3/ in the neighbourhood of pH 4.5. The precipitation of this compound has been found to be almost quantitative and the accuracy and reproducibility of the electrometric results are excellent even at low concentrations (1 x 10/sup -3/ M) of the reactants. The pH titrations offer a simple, rapid and accurate method for the determination of the thiotungstate anion as mercuric thiotungstate.
