Radioimmunoassay of changes in the level of. beta. -2-microglobulin in neoplasms

Abstract

A study was made of 17 practically healthy persons, 12 patients with benign tumors, 8 with chronic pyelonephritis, 70 with renal carcinoma, 51 with breast carcinoma, 11 with pulmonary cancer, 7 with prostatic cancer, 23 with gastric cancer and 8 with colonic cancer at different stages of disease and therapy. The concentration of ..beta..-2-microglobulin was measured using the Pharmacia commercial kit of reagents (Sweden). It has been established that in spite of the elevated mean level of ..beta..-2-microglobulin, almost half of the patients have normal concentration of this protein. Altogether the number of coincidences of the elevated level of ..beta..-2-microglobulin with the presence of malignancy for the above sites was 48.7%.
