Acid rain: its causes and its effects on inland waters

Abstract

The book attempts to give an account of some recent research on the acidification of lakes and streams and the resulting toxic effects on fish and other aquatic animals. It is largely based on the experimental and modelling studies of the recent five year Anglo-Scandinavian Surface Waters Acidification Programme. Chapters are entitled: the search for answers to key questions; the mission, transport, and chemical transformation of acid pollutants in the atmosphere; acid deposition in the UK and Europe; the role of hydrology in determining the chemistry of surface waters; the role of soils in the acidification of surface waters; comparative catchment studies; the history of lake acidification as reconstructed from paleolimnological evidence; the effects of acidification on fish and other aquatic life; models of acidification of surface waters; manipulation experiments on catchments. An appendix states the main conclusions of the Surface Waters Acidification Programme. 81 refs.
