On a possibility of investigation of pion-nucleus interactions at energies more than 10/sup 14/eV

Abstract

Gamma families produced in nucleon-nucleus and pion-nucleus interactions are separated. The results obtained are based on criteria developed in frames of scaling CS, CSC and CSCj-models. Extrapolation of the known characteristics of nucleon-nucleon interactions to superhigh-energy region is carried out in CS model. In CSC model inelastic charge exchange of the leading charged pion to neutral is taken account of. In the CSCj-model besides inelastic charge exchange jet processes were taken account of. 906 experimental ..gamma..-families with an energy 300-500 TeV, the particle number being n/sub ..gamma../ greater than or equal to 3 and minimal electron-photon cascade energies E/sub ..gamma../ greater than or equal to 2 TeV, are analysed. F=P/sub 2//P/sub 1/, experimental value (P/sub 1/ and P/sub 2/-part of families incident on experimental facility at angles ..delta..Q/sub 1/=9-18 deg and ..delta..Q/sub 2/=18-36 deg respectively) is shown to contradict the corresponding CS model value and agrees with the CSC model.
