Abstract
The potential energetic efficiency of photosynthesis is discussed. Some factors are mentioned which can reduce the theoretical efficiency. The average efficiency of a crop is 3% of the total global solar radiation. Data on the energy input and energy output concerning the production of crops are presented and discussed. Also attention is paid to the impact of nitrogen fertilization and the ratio CO{sub 2} intake and water evaporation on the energetic efficiency of photosynthesis. Next the options of producing more crops by means of area enlargement (expansion) or by means of intensification are dealt with. Finally an overview is given of the characteristics of the ideal energy crops. 1 ill., 3 tabs., 18 refs.
