Abstract
Three seasons of observations of the AM Her-type variable star E1405-451 are reported. Orbital and long-term intensity and polarization variations are investigated. Evidence is found for irregular variations in the position of the accretion column on the surface of the primary. The derived orientations and observed ratios of linear to circular polarization are used to estimate a magnetic field of approximately 30 MG in the cyclotron emitting region. Various cyclotron emission calculations are compared, and shock front calculations of previous authors are found to provide excellent quantitative fits to the observations. The existence of 1-3 s quasi-periodic oscillations is confirmed.
