Geology of North-East Greenland

Abstract

Geological investigations have been in progress in East and North-East Greenland for more than a century. However, most work in both the Caledonian fold belt and the post-Caledonian sequences has been carried out between the Scoresby Sund region in the south and Wollaston Forland in the north (between latitudes 70 deg. - 76 deg. N). The region farther north was until recently only known from a variety of reconnaissance investigations, which gave an incomplete picture of the geology. From 1988 to 1990 the Geological Survey of Greenland undertook systematic geological mapping and a variety of general geological and economic geological investigations in a sector of North-East Greenland extending from Grandjean Fjord (75 deg. N) to Joekelbugten (78 deg. N). The region corresponds to that covered by sheet 10 (Dove Bugt) in the Survey`s 1:500 000 geological map series. The Dove Bugt map sheet is currently being prepared for publication. This volume in the Survey`s Report series comprises 19 articles arising from the 1988-90 project, which deal mainly with various aspects of pre-Caledonian and Caledonian geology, but include contributions on the post-Caledonian development of the region and the mineral resource potential.
