Abstract
A flexible suction tube is towed by means of 2 or more cables in a direction substantially perpendicular to the axis of the tube. The tube is made of light plastic and has a longitudinal slot over its entire length; the width of the slot can be made adjustable. The interior of the suction tube is connected through tubes with a discharge tube in which the liquid level can vary between certain limits. The discharge tube is equipped with floats and steering surfaces to maintain its position in the water; its ends are connected to the pumps on a ship. This assembly is used in conjunction with a flexible, ballasted barrier filled with air to insure its buoyancy. The barrier may consist of a flat plastic tube, or of sheet plastic wound on a core of foamed or expanded plastic. The barrier is stored aboard a tanker or aboard the pumping ship, and when in use, it is towed by one or several speedboats.
