Problems in reclaiming farmland in Illinois

Abstract

It is concluded that land newly mined for coal should not immediately be planted with corn. A legume-grass mixture should be seeded to permit the restored land to settle properly. During the settling period, the soil's chemical, physical and biological aspects will also stabilize. Therefore, a crop rotation should include alfalfa or similar legumes along with the corn-soybean raw crops.
