Technical advances in the Pernik coal field

Abstract

George Dimitrov mining and power combine, which produces about 22% of all coal in Bulgaria, used outmoded equipment, inefficient methods and human transport prior to 1975. A development program begun in 1972 provided for exploitation of additional deposits, increased use of mechanized equipment, extension of surface mining area, employment of automated controls and better organization. Since 1975 new equipment has been procured, including EKG-4.6 type excavators, SVB-2M probes, BelAz-540 dump trucks, 4PU gallery combines, 1PNB-2 type loaders, OKP-10 and 1-MKM mining systems, BISUK-1 automated control apparatus, VAV and AVO-3 automated pump controls and new rubber belt conveyors. Planned studies and development include (in underground mines:) new drainage systems, mechanized installation of supports, development of new support systems and integration of transport system; (in surface mines:) mechanized construction and maintenance of roads and railroads, procurement of EKG-4.6 and EKG-4 type power shovels, replacement of steam locomotives with electric locomotives. Central production facilities for wooden and metal supports and a maintenance base for automated equipment are also under discussion.
