INIS and AGRIS - their use and potential in developing countries

Abstract

The paper presents a general description of the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) and of the International Information System for the Agricultural Sciences and Technology (AGRIS). The decentralized manner in which the input to the systems is prepared and the output products are exploited is descibed as well as an outline of the central operations at the Headquarters where the merging of the input, all the checking and corrections and the preparation of the output products is done. The manner in which the two systems have taken special precautions to satisfy the needs of developing countries are presented. This special attention was exercised both in the original design and development of the two systems as well as now during regular operations. Details are presented of the considerable effort that has been put by both systems into the training programme, whereby more than 903 trainees, a large part of them from developing countries, have received instruction on input preparation, output exploitation or computer aspects as they relate to INIS and AGRIS.
