Desertification and development: dryland ecology in social perspective

Abstract

This book contains a collection of 18 papers by various authors. After an introductory chapter, Part I, The global problem, contains three general papers and three case studies from the Punjab (Pakistan), East Africa and Egypt. Part II, Regional programmes, contains 7 papers on the Turan programme in Iran and 4 papers on the work of the Central Arid Zone Research Institute in India. The Turan papers include 2 of particular forestry interest: Horne, L. The demand for fuel: ecological implications of socio-economic change. 201-215. - Describing the ecological effects of firewood cutting in Turan. Bhadresa, R.; Moore, P.D. Desert shrubs: the implications of population and pattern studies for conservation and management. 269-276. - Zygophyllum eurypterum and Artemisia herba-alba.
