175 years ago - the first gas work on the European continent. Vor 175 Jahren - das erste Gaswerk auf dem europaeischen Kontinent

Abstract

On the initiative of W.A. Lampadius, the first black-coal gas works of Germany and the European continent went into operation in 1816. After a short time it was destroyed by an explosion, but it went on to produce a few weeks later - this time with technical perfection. It was extended considerably in 1827 and continued to light with 90 flames the whole production building of the local amalgamation works till 1895. Then it fell victim to its competitor - electric lighting. (orig.).
