Europe's giant accelerator. The story of the CERN 400 GeV proton synchroton

Abstract

A semipopular, well illustrated account is given of the planning and building of the CERN 400 GeV Super Proton Synchrotron. Introductory chapters describe the historical development of CERN and the planning and building of the 28 GeV Proton Synchrotron and the Intersecting Storage Rings. The contents of the main part of the book are indicated by the chapter headings: site for agreement (including international discussions involved in approval of the project and finding of the site); enter the builders (planning); down to earth; guiding and focussing; power and water; ins and outs (beam injection and extraction); acceleration; machine management (computer control system); start-up; a tool to use. The contributions of individuals and teams to the success of the project are emphasized throughout the account.
