Abstract
Olive oil removal from wastewaters by the activated sludge process is dependent on oil concentration and particle size. At oil concentrations of less than 1.5 g/L, the hydrolysis rate is almost equal to the oxidation rate. At oil concentrations of greater tha 2 g/L, the oxidation rate decreases, causing an accumulation of fatty acid in the liquor. Small oil particles (approximately 2 mu) decomposed faster than large particles (approximately 14 mu) during the 1st three hours.
