Abstract

Methods of differential thermal and X-ray diffraction analysis have been used to consider the mechanism of formation of terbium sulfides during interaction between solid sulfur and terbium. The formation of the terbium sulfides proceeds in some stages. The reaction of interaction begins on the terbium chip surface at 440-470 deg. Formation of the variable composition phase of corresponding formula type (TbS, ..cap alpha..-Tb/sub 2/S/sub 3/, TbS/sub 2/) proceeds through the stage of polysulfide formation. Reaction of sulfur with terbium in the presence of iodine is studied. The main stages of terbium sulfides formation remain those that at direct synthesis. Formation of variable composition phase proceeds in the same temperature range 680-730 deg.
