Methods of and apparatus for extracting oil from shale and like materials

Abstract

The design comprises a casing, a vertical chamber therein divided into a series of superposed zones, a tray fixed in each zone deflecting vanes rotatably mounted above each tray, a conical chute receives material from the circumference of the tray and conducts it to the tray beneath a flue through which heating gases are delivered to a space between the chamber and casing at each zone. An exhaust pipe is in communication with said space, and a fan draws gases therethrough. A pipe from the interior of the chamber at each zone conveys vapour obtained by distillation to an offtake pipe, and a fan is up on top of the offtake pipe.
