Abstract
The objective of the project was to develop a chopwood production method, in which the long length trees are felled, delimbed, cut and if necessary also chopped within the same processing stage. If the conditions so require, the chain has to be possible to change so, that cutting and chopping of stems are centralized and made in the same place, as done usually. A part of the project was focused on transportation and storage of chopwood at drying and utilization site. Available methods and equipment were surveyed in the beginning of the project. The machine and equipment needs of the project were listed. Following machines and equipment were needed: a grapple-loader, a forest trailer, a firewood harvester, a chopwood harvester, and drying, transportation and storage containers. The grapple-loader was designed, constructed in 1994, and testing started at the end of 1994. Testing of the loader continued in 1995. The chopwood harvester, based either on squeeze-cutting or spiral cutting, were tested and appeared to be operational. The operation of the chopwood harvester is based on pulsed feeding.
