Abstract

Storage batteries used together with photovoltaic cells in remote locations must have special characteristics to fit the charge and discharge profiles to which they are submitted. Therefore, to avoid over dimensioning of the photovoltaic cells, the batteries must have particularly low self-discharge characteristics. The problem of self-discharge is directly connected to the degree of technological development in the fabrication of the batteries. The self-discharge of the SLI batteries made locally was measured under standardized conditions and the results were correlated with the kinetics of the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction on the lead alloys in acid medium.
