Abstract

All over the world, the energy availability has turned out to be one of the most important problems. The greatest majority of countries, developing as well as industrialized countries are being affected by the increasing demand of energy to satisfy their social and economic development goals and the need of complementing the conventional sources of energy with the non-conventional sources has become imperative for most of them. Beginning the last decade, it has been recognized the inevitability that in a non too far future the energy supply will suffer a transitional change from its present oil dependency towards more diversified energy combinations. This transition that involves the development of a variety of energy sources, with preference to the renewable sources, represents an important technological challenge that has to be attained in a gradual and orderly fashion. Among the new energy forms and the new technologies to obtain energy that have been considered to become a part of the energy supply in the future are the so called non-conventional sources of energy (NCSE) or alternative sources of energy, such as solar, biomass, wind power and small hydro stations. [Espanol] A nivel mundial, la disponibilidad de energia se ha convertido en uno de los problemas ms importantes. La gran mayoria de los paises, tanto en desarrollo como industrializados, se ven afectados por demandas crecientes de energia para satisfacer sus metas de desarrollo econonico y social, y la necesidad de complementar las fuentes comerciales con fuentes no convencionales se ha vuelto imperativa para la mayoria de ellos. A partir de la ultima decada, se ha reconocido como inevitable que en un futuro no muy lejano la oferta de energa debera sufrir una transicin desde su actual dependencia de los hidrocarburos hacia combinaciones energeticas mas diversificadas. Esta transicion que implica lograr el aprovechamiento de una variedad de fuentes de energia, prestando particular atencion a los recursos renovables, presenta un reto tecnologico considerable y debera realizarse en una forma gradual y ordenada. Entre las nuevas fuentes energeticas y nuevas tecnologias para obtener energia que se han venido considerando para formar parte de la oferta energetica del futuro, se tienen las llamadas fuentes no convencionales de energia (FNCE), o fuentes alternas de energia, constituidas por la energia solar, la biomasa, la energia eolica, y las pequnas centrales hidroelectricas.}
