Decrease of noxious emissions in the residual fuel oil combustion; Disminucion de emisiones nocivas en la combustion de aceite combustible residual

Abstract

The residual fuel oil combustion emits noxious substances such as carbonaceous particulate, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur trioxide at unacceptable levels. Water emulsified in the fuel substantially reduces such emissions, achieving besides, in most of the cases, a net saving in the fuel consumption. The beneficial effects are shown in burning the residual fuel oil as a water emulsion, as well as the method to produce an adequate emulsion. The emulsified fuel technology offers a low cost option to reduce air pollution. The fuel oil quality has been declining during the last decades due to: 1. Increase in the production of crude heavy oils, generally with higher content of asphaltens and sulfur. 2. Less availability of vacuum distillation residues due to its conversion into greater value products. 3. More intensive conversion processes such as catalytic cracking, visbreaking, etc. that increase the asphaltenes concentration in the bottoms, causing instability problems. 4. The increase in the vanadium and other metals content as the concentration of asphaltenes increases. The use of emulsified fuel oil provides an efficient and economical method to substantially reduce the noxious emissions to the atmosphere. When the atomized oil drops get into the combustion chamber, the emulsified water flashes into high pressure steam, originating a violent secondary atomization. The effect of this secondary atomization is the rupture of the oil drops of various hundred microns, producing drops of 5 to 15 microns in diameter. Since the necessary time for combustion is an exponential function of the drop diameter, a very substantial improvement in the combustion is achieved. [Espanol] La combustion de aceite combustible residual emite sustancias nocivas como particulas carbonaceas, oxidos de nitrogeno y trioxido de azufre, a niveles inadmisibles. Agua emulsionada en el combustible reduce sustancialmente dichas emisiones, lograndose ademas, en la mayoria de los casos, un ahorro neto en el consumo de combustible. Se muestran los efectos beneficos de quemar el aceite combustible residual en forma de emulsion, asi como el metodo para producir una emulsion adecuada. La tecnologia del combustible emulsionado ofrece una opcion de bajo costo para reducir la contaminacion atmosferica. La calidad del aceite combustible residual ha estado declinando durante las ultimas decadas debido: 1. Al aumento en la produccion de petroleos crudos pesados generalmente con mayor contenido de asfaltenos y de azufre. 2. A menor disponibilidad de residuos de la destilacion al vacio debido a su conversion a productos de mayor valor. 3. A procesos de conversion mas intensivos, como cracking catalitico, {sup v}isbreaking{sup ,} etc., que aumentan la concentracion de asfaltenos en los fondos, ocasionando problemas de inestabilidad. 4. Al aumento en el contenido de vanadio y de otros metales a medida que aumenta la concentracion de asfaltenos. El uso de aceite combustible emulsionado proporciona un medio eficaz y economico para reducir sustancialmente las emisiones nocivas a la atmosfera. La emulsion contiene particulas de agua de un diametro entre 2 y 20 micras, dispersadas uniformemente dentro del aceite combustible, en una proporcion generalmente enter 5 y 10%; ademas contiene un agente tensioactivo para asegurar una emulsion estable, capaz de resistir los esfuerzos cortantes del sistema de bombeo y distribucion. Cuando las gotas de aceite combustible atomizado llegan a la camara de combustion, el agua esmulsionada en ellas se convierte instantaneamente en vapor de alta presion, ocasionando una violenta atomizacion secundaria. El efecto de esta atomizacion secundaria es la ruptura de las gotas de aceite de combustible de varias centenas de micras, produciendo gotas de 5 a 15 micras de diametro. Siendo el tiempo necesario para la combustion una funcion exponencial del diametro de la gota, se logra una mejoria muy considerable en la combustion.}
