Abstract

This paper proposes the use of the technology for the transmission of direct current that provides a saving in losses in the order of 50% in transmitting the same power as the line energized with A.C., as well as having a larger transmission capacity, since the limiting factor in operating with D.C. is given by its thermal capacity. The cost of the terminal stations is high in comparison with that of A.C., therefore it should be compensated with the benefits of the D.C. transmission. The project proposal is as a first option, to utilize the 400 KV power lines of Carbon II-Lampazos-Escobedo as a single line in Direct Current, reducing by this means about 12% of the existing losses and increasing the existing transmission capacity from the coal power stations of Rio Escondido and Carbon II. This cost includes the switching equipment for A.C., filters for harmonics, banks of VARS to compensate for a unit power factor, transformers, converters, ground electrodes, communications, buildings, land site preparation, project management costs and the preliminary and engineering studies costs. These costs can be reduced in accordance with the detail studies, for instance: there is enough capacity in Vars in the generating units, the transmission is always one-way, the utilization of diodes instead of thyristors. For the established conditions, there is a reduction of 10 MW, a 23.82 million dollars saving, and besides a larger Also available transmission capacity in the order of 500 MW, additionally, when operating with direct current, equipment from the alternating current terminal is recovered from the power lines and there will not be generation restrictions because of the unavailability of alternating current power lines; the achieved reliability is not evaluated, but it will be another benefit. The other option proposed for the project of utilization of power lines with direct current, consists in modifying or using the tie that will be constructed for the Rio Escondido Thermal Electric Station to the Northern Zone and that will operate in parallel with the alternating current network. This project provides the benefits of saving losses of about 20 MW. It is also achieved the increase in effective transmission capacity towards the Northern Zone, due to the fact that it will be Also available a controlled power mean, which facilitates the dispatch functions and re-distribution of power flows in the alternating current network. This tie is proposed of 500 MW operating in bi-polar form at least of 400 KV and reaching up to the Chihuahua Zone, allowing besides the re-dispatching of units to the Northern Zone in counting with greater capacity of effective transmission. The saving in re-dispatching could be significative; additionally, this tie will free transmission capacity from the Coal Power Stations towards the Monterrey Zone. This paper does not get deeper into the advantages regarding the dynamic behavior of the electric system in operating these ties in direct current, but they are not less important, since they can contribute with great benefits to the system during disturbance or emergency conditions. [Espanol] El presenta trabajo propone el empleo de la tecnologia de transmision en corriente directa, que proporciona un ahorro de perdidas de orden del 50% al transmitir la misma cantidad de potencia que la linea energizada en corriente alterna, asi como el contar con una mayor capacidad de transmision, dado que la limitante en la linea trabajando en corriente directa esta dada por su capacidad termica. El aspecto del costo de las estaciones terminales en corriente directa es elevado comparado con uno de corriente alterna, por lo que debe compensarse con los beneficios de la transmision. La propuesta del proyecto es como primera alternativa, emplear las lineas de 400 kV de Carbon II-Lampazos-Escobedo como una sola linea en corriente directa, reduciendo con esto alrededor de un 12% las perdidas existentes e incrementando la capacidad de transmision existente desde las centrales carboelectricas de Rio Escondido y Carbon II. Para 1995 se contara con 2600 MW de generacion y cuatro circuitos de 400 kV practicamente para transmitir energia a la zona metropolitana de Monterrey, llegando a este lugar aproximadamente 1500 MW. Se propone transmitir 750 MW por la linea en corriente directa en forma bipolar. La inversion consistira unicamente en las estaciones convertidoras, las cuales para una potencia de 750 MW sera del orden de 103 Mdolares, este costo incluye el equipo de switcheo de alterna, filtros para armonicas, bancos de Vars para compensar a factor de potencia unitario, transformadores, convertidores, electrodos de tierra, comunicaciones, edificios, preparacion del sitio, costos de administracion del proyecto y de los estudios preliminares y de ingenieria. Estos costos se pueden reducir en funcion de los estudios a detalle, como puede ser; se tiene capacidad de vars en las unidades generadoras, si se transmite en un solo sentido siempre, emplear diodos en vez de tiristores. Para las condiciones planteadas, se tiene una disminucion de 10 MW, se obtiene un ahorro de 23.82 Mdolares, se obtiene ademas una mayor capacidad de transmision disponible del orden de 500 MW, adicionalmente se recupera equipo terminal de alterna de las lineas operando en corriente directa, asi como el que no se tendran restricciones de generacion por indisponibilidades de las lineas de alterna, la confiabilidad ganada no es evaluada pero sera otro beneficio. La otra alternativa propuesta del proyecto de empleo de lineas en corriente directa consiste en modificar o emplear el enlace que se construira desde la C.T. de Rio Escondido al Area Norte y que operara en paralelo con la red de alterna. Este proyecto proporciona los beneficios de ahorro de perdidas de alrededor de 20 MW, se tiene tambien el aumento de capacidad efectiva de transmision hacia el Area Norte, debido a que se contara con un medio de potencia controlado, el cual facilita las funciones de despacho y de redistribucion de los flujos de potencia en la red de alterna. Este enlace se propone de 500 MW, operando en forma bipolar al menos en 400 kV y llegando hasta la zona de Chihuahua, permitiendo ademas redespachar unidades en el area norte al contar con una mayor capacidad de transmision efectiva. El ahorro por redespacho puede ser significativo, adicionalmente este enlace liberara capacidad de transmision de las centrales carboelectricas hacia la zona de Monterrey. No se profundiza en este trabajo sobre las ventajas en cuento al comportamiento dinamico del sistema electrico al operar estos enlaces en corriente directa, pero no son menos importantes ya que pueden aportar grandes beneficios al sistema durante condiciones de disturbio o emergencia.}
