Developments in HSE management in oil and gas exploration and production

Abstract

The major developments within the evolution of safety management in exploration and production activities from an attitude of re-action to one of pro-action are reviewed. They are: the health, safety and environment management systems (HSE MS) and the eight key elements which they comprise; the HSE case, which is the documented application of the HSE MS to a particular operation; the implementation of the HSE MS. Consideration is then given to future developments which include the integration of HSE and HSE management systems, assurance and certification, increased focus on pro-activity and goals, and increased industry cooperation.
