Study of the J/{psi} and {psi}` production in sulfur-uranium collisions at 200 GeV/nucleon; Etude de la production du J/{psi} et du {psi}` dans les collisions soufre-uranium a 200 GeV/nucleon

Abstract

The first axis of research of the NA38 experiment, realized at CERN, is to bring to the fore the quark gluon plasma (QGP). In this aim, the study of the J/{psi} production relatively to dimuon continuum and in correlation with energy density started in 1986. The relative decrease of the J/{psi} production observed was however in agreement with some models without plasma. On the other hand study of the relative production on the {psi}` and J/{psi} must allow to distinguish between nuclear absorption model and QGP. This thesis describes this study made with high statistics data taken in 1992. In this document, the apparatus is describe and especially the electromagnetic calorimeter and its pile-up rejection system which has allowed to save about 40 extra events. On top of this , because of the low {psi}` production cross-section as well as the small mass splitting between the two resonances J/{psi} and {psi}`, thorough study of all the phenomena affecting the mass resolution of the spectrometer was performed. The results show that the ratio {psi}`/{psi} is multiplied by a factor 0.61 when the density obtained during the collisions goes from 1.34 GeV/fm{sup 3} to 2.33 GeV/fm{sup 3} (density at which the plasma  More>>

This ratio is also expressed as a function of the width of the nuclear matter traversed and compared to the results of other experiments. Nevertheless, due to the large error bars, it can`t be claimed that QGP was observed in laboratory. (author). 47 refs., 90 figs., 14 tabs.}
