Abstract
The coal deposits in Spain are usually not continuous and are relatively small. About 95% of the approximately 2 bn t technically and economically recoverable reserves lie in the provinces of Asturias, Leon, Teruel and La Coruna. The total value of the Spanish mining production is 6.5 bn DM corresponding to about 1% of the gross domestic product. Fossil energy sources and uranium account for about half the value of mining production, ores for 10% and non-metallic minerals for the remaining 40%. In 1992 about 70 000 wage and salary earners were employed in the entire mining industry. In the coal mining industry there are about 200 open-cast and deep mines with a work force of about 32 000. The value of the output was about 3 bn DM in 1993; the output of coal and anthracite was about 14 mill. t in 1994. (orig.)
