Abstract

After having presented different characteristics of the migration of iron in soils submitted to an intense leaching, and noticed that a similar process could be at the origin of the quick displacement of a radioactive contamination due to wastewater releases or fallouts, the author reports an experimental study performed by using one of the most hazardous radio-element, strontium 90, placed at the top of an earth column in which an anaerobic fermentation occurs. The strontium migration is compared with that in a similar column but without fermentation. Calcium migration and pH are measured. The migration behaviour of strontium appears to be very similar to that of calcium.
