INIS Progress and Activity Report 2010

Abstract

The International Nuclear Information System (INIS) was established by the IAEA, in collaboration with interested Member States and some international organizations, in 1969. The main objective of INIS was to provide access to information on scientific literature on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy published world-wide. INIS operates under special membership arrangements that set specific duties and privileges. By the end of 2010, participation in INIS has risen to 124 Member States and 24 international organizations. INIS provides online access to over 3.2 million bibliographic references and 260,000 full-text documents available online. In 2010 additional 133,770 bibliographic records and 11,528 fulltext documents were prepared and added. This would not have been possible without the dedication and professionalism of the INIS Liaison officers and the staff of the INIS Secretariat. The joint INIS/ETDE Thesaurus, Revision 2.3, containing 21.861 valid descriptors and 9.025 forbidden terms was issued in April. The INIS multilingual Thesaurus was further improved by adding around 900 Arabic, Chinese, German, French and Spanish translations of terms. December edition of the Joint INIS/ETDE Subject Categories and Scope Descriptions contains four new subject categories; while 31 others were improved and updated. December edition of the Joint INIS/ETDE Subject Categories and Scope Descriptions contains four new subject categories; while 31 others were improved and updated. Training, assistance and feedback has been provided to a number of INIS centers, improving all aspects of their INIS operation capabilities. The INIS is also very active in the preservation of nuclear information. In 2010, over 2 million pages were digitized in close cooperation with Member States. A number of IAEA digitization projects and initiatives were supported. INIS Atomindex has been made available to Member States in XML format. INIS search widget was created enabling third-party websites to link to INIS Database. New INIS full-text search application has been tested using Google Search Appliance, which will increase search speed and download capabilities and enable multilingual queries. 702 computer program packages from the OECD/NEA Data Bank provided to 25 IAEA Member States, 70 codes received from the IAEA Member States dispatched, and 4 new computer packages received from IAEA Member States. To learn about trends and the best practices of leading scientific and technical information systems in the world, and in order to streamline INIS information management activities, workflows and technologies, while providing a basis for sustaining INIS information management activities to member states and the IAEA, a special report was commissioned from Gartner Inc. The 35th Consultative Meeting of INIS Liaison Officers was held from 28 to 29 October 2010 in Vienna. Sixty-eight delegates from 62 members participated. The Meeting was devoted to 40 years of INIS, input and production, use and effectiveness of INIS, and to the future of INIS. The commitment of INIS Members, the enthusiasm of INIS staff and a forward-looking strategy positions INIS well to meet information needs of today and of future generations.}
